SOCIETY SECTIONS

Drama Section

The Committee

Julie Ruck is very much a stalwart of DODS. She is a highly trained expert in make-up as our past production photographs will show. She has also played numerous principal roles for the Operatic and drama sections.

Another long-standing member of the drama committee is George Ruck.  George has been a member for more than forty years and has been involved in countless productions both acting and producing.  He also acts as the society’s archivist (you can read his abbreviated history of our society on the ‘History’ page.  Prior to the society becoming a limited company, George was our Chairman and is a fount of knowledge in most areas of amateur stage work!

Kate Hibbert has been acting, singing and dancing with DODS for twenty two years and has played many leading roles, particularly for the drama section.

George Ruck is one of our greatest assets! As well as our president and archivist, george has also been in more productions than can be listed here and is a sought after Director. He will be taking on Kindly Leave The Stage on our behalf.

Camille Newell is another of DODS experienced members having played in countless plays and musicals. She also enjoys torturing cast members while making either their own hair do things unimaginable, or by making wigs fit over their own hair!

2007 - Charley's Aunt

The 2007 drama production will be Charley's Aunt by Brandon Thomas took place on 1st to 4th August at St Edmund's School in Dover.

Charley's Aunt is a farce in three acts written by Brandon Thomas that broke all historic records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,466 performances.

The play was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds on 29 February 1892. It was produced by former D'Oyly Carte Opera Company actor, W. S. Penley, a friend of Thomas's, who appeared in the principal role of Lord Fancourt Babberly. Thomas himself played Sir Francis Chesney. The piece was a success, and it then opened in London at the Royalty Theatre on 21 December 1892 and quickly transferred to the larger Globe Theatre on 30 January 1893 to complete its record-breaking run.

It opened on Broadway at the Standard Theatre on 2 October 1893, where it ran for another historic long run of four years. The play also toured internationally and was revived extensively.

Our production sees the welcome return of Paul Sherman as Director (last seen with us for Annie Get Your Gun) assisted by Simon Crowley.
